Gerry Dick, host of Inside INdiana Business, interviewed SWS president Barbara Weaver Smith about trends and challenges in the virtual workspace. Smith discussed essential changes in corporate culture that are necessary for businesses to achieve the cost savings, increased productivity, and improved employee retention associated with teleworking, virtual professionals, and global teams.  September 2, 2001.


Smith Weaver Smith designed and facilitated a Corporate Visioning event for principals and advisors of Distortion Graphics, Inc., an Indianapolis firm whose technology simplifies the design and manufacturing of pre-decorated, high relief, 3-Dimensional plastic parts.  August 14, 2001.


SWS client The Community Foundation of Muncie & Delaware County was awarded a $5 million grant from Lilly Endowment for the Community Alliance to Promote Education (CAPE).  SWS served as project manager and grantwriter for the CAPE initiative, which unites schools, universities, business, youth agencies, and community leadership in a commitment to increase high school graduation rates.  Funds will support two community educational programs:  (1) an alternative day school to eliminate suspensions and expulsions, and (2) the establishment of ten Community Learning Centers to provide educational and recreational enrichment for elementary school children during the after school hours.


"Strategic Grantmaking" was the topic of a workshop for the executive directors and board members of fifteen community foundations in northern Indiana.  SWS president Barbara Weaver Smith conducted the workshop, encouraging community foundations to consider mission, focus, and unique ability as they design grantmaking strategies for greater impact in their communities. June, 2001.


SWS president Barbara Weaver Smith took part in the Missing Markets Rave hosted by Cap Gemini Ernst & Young at the Center for Business Innovation.  "Missing Markets" may be found in places where people devote time and energy to activities not traditionally accounted for in markets and economies. SWS president Barbara Weaver Smith presented "Building Virtual Teams for Innovation" with Rudy Ruggles of the Cap Gemini Ernst & Young Center for Business Innovation at the American Innovation Institute's conference "Adventure in Innovation," exploring “Intellectual Capital: Attracting, Retaining and Managing Innovative Employees.”  June 5, 2001.
